Getting started

Set up Milestone end to end

Updated July 25, 2026

This is the whole setup, start to finish. Most of it happens for you - the parts you actually do are signing in, connecting Claude Code, and binding a repo. Budget about ten minutes.

macOS desktop app

Milestone's agent features run through the desktop app, currently macOS only. You can use boards and tasks in the browser without it.

Set up

1

Open the desktop app and click Sign in. Your browser opens, you sign in there, and the app picks it up automatically.

If the browser doesn't hand you back after a few seconds, both screens show a code box - copy the code from the browser and paste it into the app. This is a normal fallback, not an error.

2

Create or pick a workspace

A workspace holds your projects, your team, and your knowledge graph. A new one comes with a sample project and board so nothing starts empty.

3

Tell Milestone what you do

Pick an intent. Choosing Ship code adds a repo step later - the other options skip it, and you can always bind a repo afterwards in settings.

4

Connect Claude Code

Milestone checks whether Claude Code is installed, installs it if not, and walks you through signing in to Anthropic.

Don't skip this. Claude Code powers every conversation in the app, not just the coding ones.

5

Bind a repo

Binding tells Milestone which board a repository belongs to, so agent work lands in the right place. See Bind a repo - there's a second step there that's easy to miss.

What happened automatically

You never had to paste a config file or copy a token. Once you signed in, Milestone connected Claude Code to your workspace on its own, and it keeps that connection healthy - refreshing credentials and repairing the config if it drifts.

Turn on team knowledge

Setup gets your agent the ability to ask Milestone things. One more switch makes it happen automatically: go to Settings → Connections, find Team knowledge sync, and turn on Enable on this machine.

This is the part people miss

Without it, your agent has the tools but starts each session cold. With it, your team's context loads on your first prompt and what the session learns comes back. See Team knowledge sync.
