Link blocking work with dependencies

Updated June 9, 2026

Dependencies capture when one task must wait for another — so the team can see what's blocked and work in the right order. Dependencies are a board feature you enable per board.

You'll need admin access

Dependencies are toggled in Board Settings, available to board admins.

Enable dependencies

1

Open Board Settings → Features

From the board's options menu (), choose Board Settings, then open the Features tab.

2

Turn on Task Dependencies

Switch Task Dependencies on — "Track task relationships and blocking dependencies for better project flow."

Open a task's detail panel and find Linked Tasks, then Link Task:

1

Choose the relationship

Pick a Relationship Type:

  • is blocked by — this task can't start until the selected task is complete.
  • blocks — the selected task can't start until this one is complete.
2

Find the other task

Search across your boards and select the task to link. Milestone won't let you create a circular dependency.

The task detail panel then shows two groups: This task waits for and Tasks waiting for this.

Blocked tasks can't be completed

If a task is blocked by an incomplete dependency, Milestone prevents you from marking it done until the blocker is finished — so the order of work stays honest.
